I had this D250 (White) for 2 days, so my comments are really nothing more than a first impression, at this point.
I bought the D250 to replace a Dell 700M that I loved, but only 4. 5 pounds is heavy with all his gear on the road – and 1280×768 on a 12 inch screen starts to be tough with the big eyes.
I made a lot of research and decided on the D250 for the Asus 1008 and Samsung NC10 mainly because of its weight and style – and the combination of a white shell with a black keyboard. I called HP and Dell, for various reasons – including the battery.
First impression of the box of the D250 was very good, fit and finish is excellent – except that the door of the bay hard drive was not put on the right and was warping up (one card was not seated). To unscrew and adjust quickly fixed, but I was surprised it was delivered in this way.
Also note that the seats of power is very strong (a large) and the unit feels very solid.
After the initial installation of Windows I was disappointed with the performance until I realized that there is an enormous burden placed on the system with the included trial version of McAffee. I uninstalled and the system is very attractive – very similar to my 700m. I will use CA Antivirus or AVG instead (seems to be general, are less System) and the D250 performs the tasks of MS Office and surf the Internet perfectly.
I did not upgrade only 2 GB of RAM with the Crucial DIMM offered here from Amazon. Everything seemed okay with it and I have not noticed any compatibility issues. I too have never noticed any change in performance, but I had very little "first" experience on which to judge.
After all happening now, I must say that I was very impressed and pleased with this little machine. Very solid, nice screen, keyboard and touchpad use and decent performance.
If I had to choose what seems to me a disappointment, there would be 2:
1. Settings screen brightness (AC or battery) does not seem to be properly stored in start / restart, and when switching between AC and battery. So sometimes I restart and it does remain on level 7, where it was when I stopped, and sometimes you will return at 5 to restart.
2. Wireless does not keep state on / off of what he had to stop – it always comes back after a restart.
That's about it.
I also found a case neoprene Targus Slipskin Peel (at Walmart for $ [...]) Who is the 250D with battery 6Cell perfectly. TSS11103US.
PS – there are two different versions of the 6 cell battery for the D250, a 48kWh and 58kWh version. My unit had the Amazon version 48kWhr East (6 hours battery life).
I hope this helps.
** UPDATE (7/15/09) **
My "disappointment # 1" (screen brightness in number) has been corrected in an update to the latest BIOS. However, the last setting is maintained (but not independently for the battery and AC) during the restart. However, the light is still down 2 levels, if you unplug the power grid. Leastthe but the behavior is consistent.
Thus, I was able to (ie had no reason to) test the ability of system restore and it worked perfectly to restore the system exactly as I received it, without recovery CDs. Very impressed.
One final note: Although this unit may not have integrated Bluetooth, you do not feel obliged to spend an additional $ [. . . ] (Or get another model), only to BT. You can find many very small USB BT dongle that work well and cost almost nothing. I have what you can barely see (about the size of a transmitter Nano Logitech) and costs $ huge [. . . ] Online. The Aspire One has recognized and installed automatically and works perfectly – for $ [. . . ].
